Main duties of the job

Principal duties of this post include:

  • Take on-going responsibility for timely reporting of patients scans.
  • Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
  • Develop and maintain good communications with General practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
  • Participate in the development of the care of patients arriving as emergencies.
  • Participate and encourage two-way communications encompassing briefing systems as appropriate.
  • Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure that all trust wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come in contact with services provided by GEH.
  • Ensure compliance with all appropriate legal and statutory requirements, including Health and Safety, Standing financial Instructions and Incident Reporting.
  • Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit - this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice

Job description

Job responsibilities

The exact timetable and rota will be subject to amendments and adjustments by the Radiology Clinical Service Lead according to the service need following consultation with other radiology team members. Consultants are expected to teach undergraduates and post-graduates as and when appropriate.

On-call commitment for the post-holder will be 1 in 9 with prospective cover. The availability supplement for the on-call commitment is at 3% rate. The average unpredictable on-call commitment (DCC) for the posts is expected to be around 0.75 PA for weekends only. At present overnight CT on-calls are outsourced to a Teleradiology provider (Medica) between 9 PM to 9AM. The Consultants- Locum and Substantive cover between 5 pm and 9PM on weekdays and bank holiday.

Night on calls is expected to be covered by recently appointed 5 Clinical Fellows

The post-holders will be expected, as a general Radiologist to undertake all types of work through the hospital (e.g. respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, strokes, colorectal surgery, cancers etc.): and any interest from candidates in the radiology departments specialist investigations including Cardiac, GI and Interventional radiology etc. will be encouraged.

The Radiology department at George Eliot Hospital has 6 substantive consultant Radiologists, 7 Locum Consultant Radiologists (full time and part time) and 1 Associate Specialist providing high quality service. The team is supported by a cohort of reporting radiographers covering Plain Xray/CT & MRI. We have Advanced practitioners for Ultrasound providing Sonography services for the region.

This is great opportunity to play a part in expanding a department which is close knit and on a single site. Special interests will be supported subject to agreement. Examples of those available include:

  • Subspeciality Reporting training e.g. Paediatrics/ Gastro etc in line with department needs
  • Clinical Informatics / Digital Health
  • Interventional Radiology

The Trust has the requisite arrangements in place to ensure all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports doctors going through the revalidation process.

Person Specification

Qualification(s) and Professional Training

Essential

  • FRCR
  • Full registration with General Medical Council Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register within 6 months of achieving CCT/CESR at the time of interview.

Desirable

  • MRCP, MRCS or other professional or higher qualification

Clinical Skills/ Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of extensive training in Cross Sectional Radiology

Desirable

  • Post graduate experience and familiarity of UK NHS hospital system
  • Experience of CT/US guided biopsy/ MSK Injections
  • Experience of MDT

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.
  • Able to develop, present and implement coherent ideas for service development/delivery.
  • Able to delegate appropriately.
  • Able to work within a team.

Desirable

  • Completed an appropriate management course.

  • Evidence of participation in Clinical audit
