Job description

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, your key responsibilities will include managing complex cases, formulating care plans and treatments, and guiding evidence-based treatment and effectiveness. You will deliver clinical care to a dedicated caseload and be supported by a practice nurse, an enhanced GP service, a dedicated supervisor, and a medical secretary team. Job responsibilities

As a consultant, you will lead a team, strive for excellence, and make a difference. Join the medical team at St Mary’s hospital to support men with mental health and neurocognitive issues related to acquired brain injury. The hospital has 67 beds across four main wards, including neurorehabilitation, acute psychiatric, and secure forensic services.

The team currently includes 3.5 consultants and 1.5 specialty doctors. You will deliver clinical care to a dedicated caseload, supported by a practice nurse, an enhanced GP service, a supervisor, and a medical secretary. The role offers excellent CPD and professional development opportunities, working 22.5 hours a week with a competitive salary, pension scheme, and other benefits.

Key Responsibilities of the Consultant Psychiatrist include:

  • Providing RC and consultant psychiatrist input to inpatients in a forensic or rehabilitation ward.
  • Option to work full-time.
  • Managing a caseload of 16-18 inpatients depending on service acuity.
  • Participating in a low-frequency second-on-call rota.
  • Assessing new referrals to ensure service needs are met.
  • Providing leadership and contributing to clinical governance and service development.
  • Maintaining relationships with external agencies such as community teams and commissioning bodies.
  • Contributing to training and education.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • CCT in general adult psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, or Psychiatry of LD. Experienced candidates not on the specialist register with AC status will also be considered.
  • Interest in clinical neuropsychiatry with higher qualifications preferred.
  • Full GMC registration and recent appraisal.
  • Section 12 (2) approval and AC status.
  • Experience working within an MDT caring for patients with complex needs.
  • Innovative, motivated, and passionate approach.
  • Good team ethos.
