Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist & Medical Director

Professionally Accountable to: Regional Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Director who will work at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke and provide senior medical cover on Knightstone Ward, our 15-bed highly specialised service providing assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for women with personality disorder and complex needs.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required. They will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their quality in accordance with GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

In addition to being the Responsible Clinician at Knightstone Ward, you will also serve as the Medical Director at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke, a 71-bed hospital providing emergency admission services for men and women, and a pathway for women to rehabilitation, including a specialist service for personality disorder.

This is a full-time position with 0.2 WTE as Medical Director and 0.8 WTE as Consultant Psychiatrist.

Main duties and Responsibilities

As a Medical Director you will:

• Ensure optimal clinical outcomes for our patients
• Lead all aspects of clinical practice and exemplify operational excellence
• Provide leadership for medical staff on professional and managerial issues, monitoring their performance
• Supervise all consultants and ensure they supervise SDs and ASs
• Provide expert knowledge and support within the service and to the wider team
• Ensure quality and compliance with internal and external standards and regulations
• Work with colleagues to deliver integrated, whole-person treatment and care
• Coach, mentor, and train colleagues
• Maintain regular communication and meetings with medical staff
• Assist in recruitment and retention of medical staff to ensure high-quality clinical service
• Ensure medical staff are involved in hospital clinical governance
• Collaborate with hospital managers to implement CQC standards 4, 7, and 9
• Chair medical advisory committee meetings and attend Cygnet Medical Directors meetings
• Liaise with the Responsible Officer and Regional Medical Director regarding concerns about medical staff's fitness to practice

As a Consultant Psychiatrist you will:

• Lead on providing high-quality care to patients admitted to Knightstone Ward
• Act as a positive role model, demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors, and staff
• Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
• Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations of service users
• Undertake investigations, diagnoses, and treatments as appropriate
• Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits
• Lead risk assessment, risk management, and embed clinical governance within the service
• Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and hearings
• Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave approvals
• Maintain accurate patient records
