Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist

Service Line:

Male Medium Secure Service

Professionally Accountable to:

Managerially Responsible to:

Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Bury and provide senior medical cover on Columbus Ward, our 13-bedded Male Medium Secure Service.

We are offering a £5,000 welcome bonus for this role!

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients as required. They will also be responsible for auditing the medical services provided at the ward, ensuring compliance with GMC standards and other relevant guidelines.

It is a 13-bedded medium secure ward for men, delivering care for those with enduring mental health needs, co-morbidity, and challenging behaviors in a calm, therapeutic environment focused on service user experience, shared care, and safety.

Your expertise will drive life-changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

There is also an opportunity to progress to Medical Director Level through our management schemes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the provision of high-quality care to patients on Columbus ward
  • Act as a positive role model, maintaining a professional attitude towards patients, families, visitors, and staff
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and conduct mental state examinations
  • Undertake investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits
  • Lead risk assessments, risk management, and embed clinical governance
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave approvals
  • Maintain patient records diligently
  • Ensure regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, and other stakeholders
  • Participate in academic meetings and adhere to professional standards for CPD
  • Contribute to the telephone on-call rota (1 in 13 weekdays/1 in 15 weekends)
