Consultant Psychiatrist - Lewisham Community Forensic Service

There is an opportunity for a 6PA Consultant post in the Lewisham Community Forensic service.

This post will suit someone with good communication and liaison skills and excellent psychiatric knowledge. Candidates with a special interest will be supported to develop this as part of their role.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is 6 PAs including 1.5 sessions for Supporting Professional Activities. There may be the opportunity to take on additional sessions within the Forensic Directorate.

About us

The Lewisham Community Forensic Team is one of four borough-based community forensic teams in SLaM. It is made up of one full-time and three part time Consultant Psychiatrists (including this post), a full-time Team Leader, a Senior Psychologist, 3 Social Workers, 6 Community Psychiatric Nurses, an Out of Area placement coordinator and a Senior Administrator.

Job responsibilities

There is an active teaching programme conducted for the Forensic Directorate at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience on Friday mornings andthe successful applicant would be encouraged to participate. In addition, there are opportunities to teach psychiatrists-in-training and medical students as well other multi-disciplinary staff. Candidates with an understanding of health inequality issues are particularly encouraged to apply.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of gaining CCT in forensic or general adult psychiatry
  • Section 12 approval
  • Approved Clinician status
  • Registered for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, management or research
  • Additional clinical qualifications
Experience
  • Inpatient or community forensic experience
  • Management of patients with complex mental health needs
  • Competence in the assessment and management of physical ill health
  • Quality assurance & improvement
  • Experience of teaching medical students, psychiatric trainees and other NHS staff
  • Appreciation and understanding of health inequalities
  • Experience in writing papers for academic journals and training materials
  • Experience of participation in research project
  • Completion of a portfolio demonstrating competence in supervising trainees
  • Significant experience of working within community mental health services
Knowledge / Skills
  • Medication management for treatment-resistant conditions
  • Management of complex multi-source information to develop a formulation and management plan, integrating biological, psychological and social perspectives
