Overview
The North London NHS Foundation Trust (NLFT) is recruiting a Consultant Psychiatrist to work in the Integrated Enfield Learning Disabilities Service in a community-based post. This full-time role offers 10 Programmed Activities per week (7.5 PAs for direct clinical care and up to 2.5 PAs for supporting professional activity). The post holder will provide clinical and professional leadership and participate in related management activities. As a senior clinician, the post holder will have an integral role in the performance of the team(s), further development of the service(s), and the development of clinical pathways and priorities.
Responsibilities
- Manage, appraise and supervise junior medical staff as agreed with the medical director and in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- Ensure junior doctors are compliant with the Working Time Directive.
- Report concerns about professional conduct or competence of medical or other colleagues.
- Comply with the principles of practice laid out by the General Medical Council and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and professional codes of conduct.
- Demonstrate compliance with legal obligations covering clinical practice (e.g., Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act, The Children Act).
- Participate in annual appraisal for consultants and annual job plan reviews with the Clinical Director and Service Manager or Managing Director.
- Attend and participate in the Trust academic program, including lectures and seminars of the internal CPD program; comply with CPD regulations of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Undertake administrative duties related to patient care; record clinical activity accurately and submit promptly to the Information Department.
- Maintain confidentiality as advised by professional and Department of Health guidelines; ensure proper and safe discharge procedures for in-patients in line with guidelines.
- Engage with service users and carers; promote equitable access to services; ensure successful multi-disciplinary working.
- Collaborate with local managers and professional colleagues to ensure efficient service delivery; contribute to management and financial planning; maintain relationships with GPs, the CCG, Social Services and the voluntary sector.
Qualifications
- Essential: MB BS or equivalent; Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise; Included on the GMC LD Specialist Register OR within six months; Approved clinician; Section 12 approval.
- Desirable: Qualifications or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management; Additional clinical qualification; In good standing with GMC; Holds a valid UK driving licence or proposed alternative.
Clinical skills, knowledge and experience
- Essential: Excellent knowledge in specialty; strong biopsychosocial clinical skills and wide medical knowledge; excellent oral and written English; ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty; evidence-based decision making; ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
- Desirable: Wide range of specialist and subspecialist NHS experience or comparable service.
Academic skills and lifelong learning
- Essential: Ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training; ability to work in and lead a team; commitment to shared leadership and collaborative improvement; participation in research or service evaluation.
- Desirable: Ability to plan and deliver teaching; reflect on CPD; experience in clinical research/service evaluation; evidence of achievement in education, research and audit.
