A leading healthcare provider seeks a Consultant Psychiatrist for the Sorrel Unit, an intensive care psychiatric ward. The role involves medical leadership, patient management, and ensuring high-quality care for detained patients. This permanent, full-time position requires strong collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and adherence to clinical governance processes.
This job attracts the following remuneration package for the successful external applicant:
£8,000 - Relocation Allowance (if applicable)
1 PA - for Special interest (subject to agreement)

SorrelUnit is the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit for patients at Prospect ParkHospital who require enhanced care and management of risk that cannot bemanaged on the open acute wards. It has 11 beds, all single accommodation withen-suite facilities.
The ward admits only those detained under the MentalHealth Act. It is a mixed sex ward although designed to operate with separatemale and female areas which are clearly defined. It has 2 seclusion rooms and aExtra Care Area where patients are treated under Long Term Segregationframework.
We are looking for a consultant and join the service to continue with the delivery of high quality patient care in Sorrel Ward, at Prospect Park.
Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BHFT) wasformed in April 2001 and successfully became licensed as a Foundation Trust inMay 2007. In April 2011 the community services which were previouslythe provider arms of NHS Berkshire East and NHS Berkshire West PCTs merged withthe Trust.
The main centres of population are Reading in theWest of the County and Slough in the East.Within Berkshire there are also major populations at Newbury, Wokinghamin the West and Bracknell, Maidenhead, Windsor and Ascot in the East, as welland many significant urban developments in smaller towns forming essentially asingle conurbation along the M4 Corridor.
Berkshire is characterised by concentrations ofpopulation and large rural areas. Itincludes some of the most affluent and least deprived communities in the countrybut also has pockets of markedly deprived wards. The Trust ispart of two Integrated Care Systems (Frimley ICS and Buckinghamshire,Oxfordshire & Berkshire West ICS) and partners with six local unitaryauthorities.
The post holder will be working as aConsultant Psychiatrist on Sorrel Unit.
As Consultant Psychiatrist, thepostholder will have the following responsibilities:
Consultant medical responsibilityfor the diagnosis/management and treatment of allocated patients.
Supervision of other medical staffattached to the team and multidisciplinary team working with nursing staff andother mental health professionals.
To provide medical leadership to theinpatient services whilst working closely with other members of themulti-disciplinary clinical team, particularly the Ward Manager, ClinicalDevelopment Lead nurse and the ward Clinical Psychologist.
To participate in the Berkshire outof hours on-call Consultant Rota this is approximately 1 in 40 for Adult andOlder Peoples Mental Health Wards and CRHTT. There is a separate rota forCAMHS service.
The post holder is expected toarrange cross cover with the other Consultant Psychiatrists in the hospital.These arrangements are agreed with the Locality Director and Associate MedicalDirector for Inpatient Service.
To participate in medical audit, theTrusts Clinical Governance processes
To act as Responsible Clinician (RC)in accordance with the requirements under the Mental Health Act (1983) and itsamendments for allocated inpatients. Some functions, such as seclusion medicalreviews and renewal of sections/ completion of consent to treatmentrequirements, requires on site presence for face-to-face assessments.
To participate in the Care ProgrammeApproach (CPA) and, in doing so, to provide psychiatric leadership to themulti-disciplinary team ensuring that the patients medical and psychiatricneeds are met.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
