Job Description:

Job summary

This post is for a full-time consultant psychiatrist working in our inpatient service on Westerdale North. It is a 20-bed mixed-sex ward for older people with mental health difficulties. The consultant will provide all clinical PAs into this ward, with no routine coverage of other inpatient or community services. This is a replacement post following the relocation of the previous post-holder outside the NHS. The post benefits from additional non-medical approved clinician input.

Westerdale Ward is fully staffed and moved into purpose-built premises at Roseberry Park Hospital in Middlesbrough in March 2023. It is co-located with Westerdale South and nearby general inpatient wards. The ward provides holistic assessment and treatment, mainly for patients from the Teesside catchment area, with strong links to local community mental health teams and crisis services.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical PAs are 10 PA (7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA) across the week, based on Westerdale North Ward, managing 10-12 patients due to a nurse consultant. The consultant psychiatrist provides clinical and medical leadership to the MDT, leading assessment and treatment.

The post involves working with a cohesive MDT, attending daily ward meetings, reviewing new admissions, and maintaining relationships with patients’ families and carers, in line with the Triangle of Care. The psychiatrist will model good prescribing practices according to national guidelines.
