Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Hospital Beckton and provide senior medical cover on Upping Ward, our 15-bed Intensive Support Service for women with a diagnosis of personality disorder and complex mental health needs.

The service pathway provides a robust programme of care for women with challenging high-risk behaviour who experience difficulties with engagement in therapeutic programmes. We aim to meet the needs of these women, who may have had previous inappropriate placements, in a less restrictive setting.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients as required, and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward to ensure their quality in accordance with GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

In this role, your expertise will drive life-changing treatment, fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and a first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

At Cygnet, you'll enjoy excellent professional development, shopping, travel and leisure discounts, as well as a range of healthcare and financial benefits to support your happiness both in and out of work.

Apply now to enjoy excellent career prospects while making a difference to others every day.

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the provision of high-quality care to service users admitted to Upping Ward
  • Act as a positive role model, maintaining a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors, and staff
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
  • Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Undertake investigations, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits
  • Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management, and embed clinical governance within the service
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and managers' hearings, and attend hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for patient transfers and leave approvals
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Ensure regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
  • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, and other concerned bodies, maintaining appropriate reports
  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to professional standards for CPD as set by GMC, Department of Health, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Contribute to a 1:6 telephone on-call rota
