Consultant Psychiatrist & Deputy Medical Director

Job Title: Consultant Psychiatrist
Service Line: Male PICU or Female Acute
Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director
Managerially Responsible to: Hospital Manager

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to work at Cygnet Hospital Kewstoke, providing senior medical cover on Nash Ward, our 12-bed PICU service for men, and/or Sanford Ward, our 16-bed Female acute service. The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician, overseeing and maintaining the care of all ward inpatients as required, and will be responsible for auditing the medical services to ensure quality in accordance with GMC standards and other relevant professional guidelines.

Your expertise will drive life-changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a Responsible Clinician looking to expand in management as a Deputy Medical Director, with potential progression to Medical Director through our management schemes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Lead the provision of high-quality care to service users on Nash Ward and Sanford Ward.
  2. Act as a positive role model, demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  3. Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  4. Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations.
  5. Conduct investigations, diagnosis, and treatment.
  6. Perform ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits.
  7. Lead risk assessments, risk management, and embed clinical governance.
  8. Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and hearings.
  9. Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave approvals.
  10. Maintain accurate patient records.
  11. Maintain communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
  12. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, and other stakeholders.
  13. Participate in academic meetings and adhere to CPD standards set by GMC, the Department of Health, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  14. Contribute to a 1:6 telephone on-call rota.
