The NHS is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Thames Valley FCAMHS team in Oxford, where you'll provide clinical support and work closely with the multidisciplinary team. You'll offer specialist child and adolescent forensic mental health expertise, supporting young people at risk, and drive innovative service development while ensuring compliance with Mental Health Act policies. The Trust is seeking a consultant psychiatrist to provide clinical support and inform ongoing implementation and practice in relation to the work of the Thames Valley FCAMHS team. The consultant psychiatrist will work closely in these matters with the clinical team lead, an experienced senior psychologist and the team manager. This will be in line with both the clinical and non-clinical functions outlined in the national service specification.The FCAMHS team offers a range of services and interventions to a specific geographical area, the 'Thames Valley'(Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire). The team provides specialist child and adolescent forensic mental health expertise at a variety of levels and to a variety of agencies, institutions and networks working with young people under 18 years old.
The community FCAMHS team is principally a tertiary referral service for locality CAMHS teams (including CAMHS/YOT link workers) and associated agencies. The team wishes to be accessible to all agencies (e.g. social services, youth offending teams (YOTs), prisons, courts, solicitors, education etc) which may have contact with young people with mental health difficulties who either present serious risk of harm to others or are involved with the criminal justice system. For this reason, initial contacts about possible referrals are welcomed from all agencies.
The multidisciplinary team functions on several levels in all environments:o As a resource for informationo As a means of formal consultationo As a service providing specialist assessments and interventionso As a training resource for front-line workerso As a means of informing and developing strategic links between mental health services and the criminal justice system.
Other functions within the regional FCAMHS role include:o Close liaison with related specialist services within CAMHS (harmful sexual behaviour, victims of sexual harm, Youth Justice Liaison and Diversion)o Liaison with locality CAMHS and YOTs and all agencies working to support young peopleo Liaison and advice to Criminal Courts and the criminal justice system including prisons and other secure settingso Linkage with national in-patient serviceso Linkage with services elsewhere involved in mental health provision to young people from the Thames Valley in secure or specialist educational or other settingso Informing policy and forming strong links with national organisations responsible for strategic developmento Providing professional training for individuals wishing to obtain the necessary experience to work in this area of expertiseo Clinical lead role within lead provider function for South Central FCAMHS

The consultant psychiatrist will work across the regional community forensic service and when needed with allied services on an advisory level.The post-holder will be responsible for: Provision of specialist child and adolescent forensic mental health expertise in advising, formal consultation and, where necessary, assessment and intervention. The consultant will be responsible in the first instance for a designated catchment area forming a proportion of the overall region covered by the community forensic component of the teams remit. In addition, he/she will take some referrals from other parts of the teams catchment when required. Provision of psychiatric liaison to identified teams in childrens social care (as outlined above) The diagnosis, management and treatment of children and adolescents who need consultant psychiatric intervention Provision of support to local CAMHS and other agencies regarding appropriate risk assessment and management in high-risk cases involving young people presenting risk of harm to others Active involvement with the families of young people referred to the service Active liaison with a wide range of professionals and agencies working with children and young people especially those involved in juvenile criminal justice (within the FCAMHS role) and those involved with childrens services (in the edge of care liaison role) Acceptance of medical responsibility for patients on his/her own caseload and the caseloads of medical staff under his/her supervision. Medical responsibility in many instances will be shared with consultants working in local tier 3 teams. Development of an active leadership role within his/her area of specialist competence in the catchment area for which he/she is responsible. This will involve the development of good relationships with senior professionals in CAMHS and other agencies, identification of gaps in provision for young people and a capacity for service development and innovation. Provision of clinical leadership within CAMHS and collaboration in systems of supervision and care management. Support and advice to the FCAMHS clinical team lead and team- manager. The consultant will offer consultation and joint working with other professionals wherever possible but will also have the capacity to work autonomously when this is required. Provision of a prompt response to all referrals and a rapid response to perceived emergencies. When necessary, this will include responsibility for Mental Health Act assessment of patients Working in partnership with local multidisciplinary teams and other agencies to ensure clinical management of patients in relation to the care programme approach (CPA). This will include risk assessment and management, the assessment of the needs of carers, and the development of services to meet the needs of patients and families for which the teams are responsible Urgent and emergency clinical work is undertaken by the whole multi-disciplinary team, including the consultant, during normal working hours. The consultant provides senior medical cover, together with the other consultants for the sector/service.
