Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Psychiatry to work within Cygnet Healthcare in Lancashire.

Cygnet Healthcare is an 18-bed male acute service. The service provides a safe and stabilising environment for men experiencing an acute episode of mental illness who require emergency admission.

In this role, your expertise will drive life-changing treatment, supported by a Specialty Doctor and a first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologists, and occupational therapists.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Lead the provision of high-quality care to service users admitted to Columbus ward.
  2. Act as a positive role model, maintaining a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors, and staff.
  3. Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
  4. Assess referrals and undertake mental state examinations of service users.
  5. Undertake investigations, diagnosis, and treatment as appropriate.
  6. Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews, and clinical audits.
  7. Lead risk assessment and management, embedding clinical governance within the service.
  8. Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals and attend hearings.
  9. Liaise with the Ministry of Justice regarding patient transfers and leave approvals.
  10. Maintain accurate patient records.
  11. Ensure regular communication with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager.
  12. Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, staff, and other stakeholders, maintaining proper reports.
  13. Participate in academic meetings and adhere to professional standards for CPD set by GMC, Department of Health, and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  14. Contribute to the Telephone On-call rota (1 in 13 weekdays / 1 in 15 weekends).
Candidate Requirements:
  1. Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified.
  2. Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12, and AC Status.
  3. Experienced and knowledgeable in adult psychiatry and mental health diagnosis.
  4. Familiar with the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and Code of Capacity.
  5. Excellent communication skills for interviewing, assessing, treating patients, and documenting medical notes.
  6. Committed to ongoing professional development.
  7. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  8. Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent.
