Consultant Psych GA Inpatient (Avocet) *with £20K Support Package*
  • New Starter package of £15,000 spread over 3 years as a retention bonus

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Adult Inpatient Ward in Woodlands, Ipswich, Suffolk.

This is a 1.0 WTE Consultant Psychiatrist post working on Avocet Ward, Woodlands, Ipswich, in the Acute Adult Pathway in Suffolk Services. This is a replacement post following the previous post-holder retiring.

Main duties of the job

Avocet Ward is one of two 21 bed acute adult wards within the Woodlands Unit, adjacent to the Ipswich Hospital on the same site.

The Unit also consists of a 10 bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a Section 136 suite, a later life ward and a Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team. The wards work collaboratively with the community teams, in particular with the Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team, to provide comprehensive acute treatment.

  • The post holder is appointed as a senior professional to provide advanced professional expertise and clinical leadership. The post holder is expected to conduct him/herself in a manner that demonstrably helps the Trust deliver its strategic and business objectives, and to act as an ambassador at the interface with external partners and stakeholders.
  • The post-holder must comply fully with the Nolan Principles and the Standards of Business Conduct.
  • The post holder is being appointed to a post of clinical leadership and will, therefore, be expected to demonstrate leadership qualities as set out in the Medical Leadership Competency Framework.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • The post holder will undertake clinical management of patients at a level appropriate for a Consultant psychiatrist, including diagnostic assessment, development of management plans, and treatment regimes.
  • Provide medical expertise within the multidisciplinary team, including Junior Doctors, CPNs, Psychologists, and Social Workers in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of referred patients; participate in team meetings, supervision, and development of the team.
  • The post holder will provide support and advice to non-medical colleagues working in the Teams when appropriate.
  • Liaison with professional colleagues in primary care, secondary care, and other psychiatric teams is also required. The Consultant is expected to be trained in mental health and capacity legislation to meet the requirements of emergency work, community treatment orders, and assessment of capacity.
  • Hold Responsible Clinician status, as defined within the Mental Health Act.
  • Undertake additional duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, and be available for such irregular commitments outside normal duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
  • Participate in regular Clinical Supervision with peers to maintain standards of care and ensure Clinical Governance needs are met.

Experience
  • At least 6 months experience in specific specialty
  • 3 years or equivalent medical experience
  • Evidence of knowledge of diagnosis, treatment, and management of complex mental illness
