Job overview

We are excited to be looking for a new colleague to join our expanding team of substantive consultants based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The post is a new addition to the current team of consultants currently working in the East area of the Health Board. The post has arisen from plans to reconfigure and strengthen our existing services. In particular, we are seeking to strengthen our already well-developed services in Stroke medicine.

Wrexham is superbly located in North East Wales, on the border with Cheshire and Shropshire. Excellent lines of communication allow easy access to Chester, Liverpool and Manchester, but also provide a gateway to the North Wales coastline and Snowdonia National Park.

Main duties of the job

Deliver a consultant-led Stroke service at Wrexham Maelor Hospital for the diagnosis and management of both outpatients and inpatients.

Take consultant responsibility for stroke inpatient care as part of the team, with support from a designated team of junior doctors based on the Stroke unit. Numbers of outlying patients can vary, but due to the nature of the role are minimal.

Qualifications
  • MB BS or equivalent.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
  • CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • Higher degree, e.g. MD or PhD.
Clinical training and experience
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Geriatric Medicine with sub specialization in General Internal medicine and or stroke.
  • Specialist Stroke Fellowship.
  • Willingness to take part in out of hours stroke on-call Rota.
Personal attributes
  • Good interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
  • An interest in working in a Care of the Elderly/Stroke Medicine job, willingness to undertake professional responsibilities at local / regional / national level.
  • Reliable, self-motivated and punctual.
  • Evidence of the ability to work in stressful situations and/or when under pressure.
  • Willingness to engage in teaching and training.
  • Welsh Speaker or willingness to learn Welsh.
Clinical Governance/Audit/Research
  • An understanding of the Strategic and Operational issues underpinning Clinical Governance and their application in daily practice and evidence of such.
  • Evidence of participation. Research-based publications and previous audits.
Management
  • An understanding of NHS management practices and their application and evidence of such.
  • A willingness to partake actively in the management of any specialist interest of the appointee within the job and participate in the departmental management meetings.
  • Evidence of participation in Management course or training.
