Job description
Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine (Asthma)

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic, dedicated colleague with an interest in asthma to join a team of nine full-time and two academic colleagues who together work across Morriston, Singleton and Neath Port Talbot Hospitals. He / she will join with five Respiratory Physicians and 22 colleagues in other medical specialities, who together support the acute General Medical intake at Morriston.

Main duties of the job

The Respiratory Unit at Morriston provides a referral service for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of respiratory disease with the exception of cystic fibrosis. The Unit has a strong ethos of team working and has close working relations with colleagues in Thoracic Surgery, Radiology and Histopathology.

Respiratory Clinics are accommodated in the Out-Patient Block with Lung Function, Radiology and Phlebotomy services in close proximity, which facilitates a 'one-stop' service for many patients. The Lung Function Laboratory is well-equipped with two body boxes, dosimeter for bronchial challenge testing and equipment for cardiopulmonary exercise testing. There are a full range of radiology services including CT, MRI, nuclear medicine and bronchial arteriography. PET scanning is currently undertaken in Singleton. There is a weekly Radiology meeting and a monthly Thoracic Pathology meeting.

Ward J is a designated respiratory ward with 25 beds. The Respiratory Team also has beds on Gowers Ward, which also has six beds under Neurology. Morriston operates a ward-based system for acute medical admissions.

Respiratory Clinics are provided at Morriston, Singleton and Neath / Port Talbot Hospitals. A number of General Chest Clinics run on all three sites.

The department are aspiring to create a dedicated respiratory rota and there is an expectation if successful you will be required to participate on that rota.

Experience

  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Comprehension of core philosophy and building blocks of Clinical Governance
  • Knowledge of risk management
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
