Consultant Physician Care of the Elderly

Weare looking for an innovative, enthusiastic, and patient centred Consultant Geriatrician to join our team in the Care for OlderPeople at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

We are a friendly, dynamic and diverseteam of experienced clinicians who will provide mentoring and support tailoredto your specialist interests, and who recognise the importance of a goodwork-life balance.

We have a long tradition in multi-professionaltraining and education at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as guidingcandidates through a successful CESR application.

We are actively involved in caretransformation for older people of Barnsley at Integrated Care Board level throughthe development of a Frailty Virtual Ward, Frailty SDEC, and Integrated Carewith community colleagues, as well as service development and delivery inhospital inpatient and outpatient settings.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for the developmentof Care of the Elderly services along with their colleagues and is expected to deliver adaily inpatient ward round as well as outpatient clinics and timetabledsessions on Frailty SDEC.

They also expected to have a strong commitment to participating inteaching and clinical supervision of medical students and trainees, contributingto the training of nurses and other staff and participating in the activitiesof the Postgraduate Medical Centre including Medical and Clinical Audit.

The candidate will have allocated 1.5 PA for Core SPA time and 1 PAto pursue specialist interest.

Thispost will help to continue to facilitate the progression of Care of the Elderlyservices. It is an exciting time to be joining our team we are ambitious tofurther develop the model of care for frail elderly patients including ourservices in areas such as Stroke, Frailty, Orthogeriatrics and Dementia andwe are keen to support the successful candidate in specialist interest areas.

Person Specification
Skills and Abilities
  • Willingness and ability to fulfill the key elements of the job description.
  • Possession of the clinical skills required to perform the job including both elderly care and general internal medicine.
  • Ability to cope with the demands of a DGH based Consultant.
  • Ability to lead and develop the service.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multi-professional and team basis with all levels of staff.
  • Ability and evidence of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience
  • Experience in the management of a broad GIM caseload.
  • Experience in the management of an Elderly Care Medicine caseload.
  • Experience in a specialist interest that will complement those of other staff.
Qualifications
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within 12 months of specialist registration due to completion of training or within 12 months of specialist registration due to application via CESR with the submission completed at time of application for post
Teaching and Management
  • Evidence of effective teaching to medical students and doctors in training and to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence of formal management training.
