Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Paediatrician. This is for 10 programmed activities. Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit a motivated, passionate and dynamic consultant paediatrician for this substantive post. There is a degree of flexibility in the type of clinic activity and specialist interest/ research interest that is negotiable as allowed by service needs and the experience and skills of the post holder.

The Child Health Directorate offers services across Torbay and South Devon including general paediatrics, neonatology and community paediatrics. There is a 19 bed paediatric inpatient ward (Louisa Cary), a 10 space Short Stay Assessment Unit and a 10 cot, Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit. As well as a paediatric outpatient department in Torbay Hospital the team provide outpatient services across South Devon.

Main duties of the job

To work in close partnership with our existing consultant body to provide a service for children and young people in Torbay and South Devon.

Successful candidates would join a team of 14 acute paediatric consultants. We operate an acute service rota, which includes:

  1. Consultant Of the Week (Mon-Thurs, Fri-Sun) who manages the ward;
  2. SCBU & Safeguarding Consultant (Mon-Fri) who manages the Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit and any Safeguarding referrals, including strategy meetings and CP medicals.
  3. Paediatric Acute Consultant, covering all the acute admissions through our Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit, GP and A&E referrals.

On-call overnight commitments are 1:14.

It is important that the successful candidate shares our commitment to service improvement by striving for excellence in our clinical services with innovative service delivery and high quality training for all staff. They will be approachable, pro-active and able to provide advice and support to colleagues, doctors in postgraduate training and members of the multidisciplinary team. The successful candidate will be able to work with a variety of professionals and participate fully as a member of a team working to develop and extend the paediatric service. As well as caring for young people and their families we are looking for an individual who will care for themselves and the rest of the team that they work with.

About us

The Child Health Directorate in an integrated service providing acute and some community care, working closely with community partner Children and Family Health Devon.

The Child Health Directorate is focussed to deliver the highest quality standards of paediatric care for the local population, this includes care of the child and family in the Emergency Department, on the Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (SSPAU) on Louisa Cary Ward, in Out-Patients and on SCBU. The Trust and the department are fully committed to work towards the RCPCH's 'Facing the Future' Standards.

The Child Health Department works closely with other departments in the Trust and there is close co-operation with the Emergency Department, the Diagnostics Department, ITU and Obstetrics in particular which on the formal level include Critical Care Review Meetings in general paediatrics and Neonatology, Critical Care Liaison Meetings, Perinatal Meetings, Obstetric-Paediatric Meetings, Trust wide Clinical Governance Meetings for Child Health in regular intervals.

All Consultant Paediatric staff are co-located on the hospital site with additional work undertaken within our local area.

Job responsibilities

Patient safety, dignity and care are the highest priority and at the centre of all that we do.

To provide high quality consultant delivered care to patients including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the hospital.

To be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring our standard to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.

To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise and train the juniors and specialty doctors. To be proactive in the departments clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust.

To liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the department to address any issues arising that may affect the services.

To participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.

To communicate with local GPs.

Other responsibilities include:

  1. Junior Staff: Recruitment, appointment and educational supervision including educational contracts, regular appraisal, organisation of study leave, annual leave and rotas.
  2. Budget: Co-operate with the Deputy Medical Director and Divisional General Manager on budget issues.
  3. Communication: This will include the responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the Trust as well as other Trusts.
  4. Teaching: To have an active role in the junior doctor training programme.
WEEKLY TIMETABLE / JOB PLAN

Total Programmed Activities: 10 PAs (averaged over 14 weeks)

Direct Clinical Care (DCC): 7.5 PAs per week

Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs): 2.5 PAs per week (new consultants, 1.5 PAs for consultants with a year or more experience).

Overnight on call 1/14 attracts a 3% salary supplement.

Please note that the agreed level of duties in relation to SPAs, additional responsibilities and other duties will be reviewed on a regular basis as part of the Job Planning process.

The above may change as new consultant posts are recruited to. Additional PAs may be available to reflect extended working day and weekend working.

Please note that the agreed level of duties in relation to SPAs, additional responsibilities and other duties will be reviewed after 12 months in post (6 months for those who have already been a consultant previously) and there is an expectation that your SPAs will decrease to 1.5 PAs with an increase to 8.5 PAs for DCC. Part-time Consultants need to devote proportionately more of their time to SPAs. This should be agreed on an individual basis.
