Job description

Overview

This is a substantive post following expansion of the department and converting a locum post to a substantive one. The successful candidate will join 6 substantive paediatric surgical consultants to make a department of 7 substantive consultants. The post holder will provide elective and acute general paediatric surgery and be one of 3 consultants in the department responsible for delivering the paediatric urology service to network partners with a focus on outreach functional urology. You will be supported by a team of Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists, Paediatricians, Neonatologists, Paediatric Gastroenterology, Radiologists and Pathologists.

Responsibilities

• The clinical duties include day-case and inpatient operating lists and outpatient paediatric surgery, urology and functional urology.
• The post supports the department in developing relationships with network partner hospitals and regional services.
• Work as part of the consultant, nursing and directorate team to protect and enhance the reputation of the Alex, delivering the leading paediatric surgery service in the South East Coast region.
• Collaborate with neonatology, radiology, anaesthetics and paediatrics; participate in regional solutions for children and young people; contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; support safeguarding and high quality service delivery.
• Be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances as requested by the appropriate consultant, within reasonable limits.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

This post will allow a 1 in 6 on-call service with a consultant of the week model in the first instance. A Category A supplement of 5% applies. The post provides day-case and inpatient operating lists and outpatient paediatric surgery, urology and functional urology. The postholder will help develop relationships with network partner hospitals and strategic sites in East Surrey, St Richard’s, Eastbourne, Conquest, Hastings and Worthing.

Departmental Context

The department operates as a regional service, networked with partner organisations in East Sussex, Surrey and Sussex, Queen Victoria Hospital, and Sussex Community NHS Trusts, with links to the South Thames Paediatric Network, Evelina London, St George’s Hospital, Kings College Hospital, and the Wessex and Thames Valley ODN. The department includes neonatal surgical services with Trevor Mann Baby Unit and supports minimally invasive surgery and regional intestinal failure services. The unit hosts two paediatric surgical trainee posts and collaborates with related tertiary specialties on site.

Clinical Governance, Teaching & Research

Responsibilities include safeguarding, high-quality service delivery, and contributing to regional solutions for children and young people. The post supports undergraduate teaching at BSMS and postgraduate teaching for doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. The post also supports a research programme and participation in audits, with opportunities to publish and present findings.

Person Specification

Experience and qualifications include:

• Essential: Paediatric Urology skills/experience; basic medical degree; FRCS Paediatrics or equivalent; full and specialist GMC registration or eligibility; UK CCT in Paediatric Surgery or equivalent; on-call duties in paediatric surgery; ability to work in multi-professional teams; understanding of NHS governance and resource constraints; evidence of teaching and auditing activity; good communication skills.
• Desirable: Fellowship in paediatric urology; higher degree; teaching qualification; additional paediatric urology experience; publications and prizes/honours.
