Job description

Job overview

The post is PAs. The first year includes PAs seconded for research linked to the Children Hospital. This may be extended but if not the post would revert to sessions in Liaison Psychiatry.

Years ago, the PPMS was delivered entirely by Psychology. Psychiatry posts were created in response to significant gaps in access to psychiatric input for children and young people with co-morbid mental health problems or complex presentations. Since then, the PPMS has evolved into a multidisciplinary service, reflecting the needs of all children and young people at CUH, incorporating nursing and family therapy. The professional leads collaborate to balance MDT input to meet the psychological and mental health needs of children and young people at CUH. An exciting aspect of this role is the opportunity to contribute to the development of Cambridge Children’s Hospital, a partnership between CPFT, CUH, and the University of Cambridge, which aims to create a dedicated children’s hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, integrating existing Tier wards from Fulbourn. This hospital will provide integrated physical and mental health care at a scale not previously achieved in the UK.

Depending on the interests of the post-holder, research sessions could focus on various areas related to the Children’s Hospital development.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as an MDT member of the Paediatric Psychological Medicine Service (PPMS) based at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH).
  • To provide medical leadership within the PPMS and collaborate with other professional leads (Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing) to ensure effective MDT functioning and delivery of high-quality psychological and psychiatric care to children and young people.
  • To support a coordinated MDT approach to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of children and adolescents with psychological difficulties and psychiatric co-morbidities across paediatric wards and outpatient clinics.
  • To assist psychological services colleagues in maintaining a focus on both preventative and high-quality psychological interventions for children, young people, and their families.
  • To provide advice and support to the broader PPMS regarding medical/psychiatric issues, such as complex cases, risk assessment, and psychopharmacology.
