Job description

Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Applications are invited for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist interest in Glaucoma.

The successful candidate will join a team of 21 Consultant Ophthalmologists at an exciting time of new development and investment in the Department of Ophthalmology at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

The successful candidate will help manage and develop the glaucoma service in collaboration with fellow consultants Miss Humma Shahid, Mr Stylianos Georgoulas and Miss Tasneem Khatib. The glaucoma service manages patients in the eye clinic at Addenbrooke's Hospital as well as an offsite eye clinic in the Vision and Eye Research Institute (VERI) at Anglia Ruskin University. The glaucoma service also provides oversight governance for a community glaucoma scheme.

Main duties of the job

The glaucoma service provides care for our local patients as well as a regional service for more specialist management in the East of England. There is close collaboration with other sub-specialties for co-management of more complex cases such as inflammatory eye disease and paediatric ophthalmology. The glaucoma service is supported by a team of hospital optometrists and glaucoma clinical nurse specialists.

The successful candidate will participate in the consultant on call rota for ophthalmic emergencies (currently 1 in 11 rota). Emergency eye care is provided in one of our Eye Clinics with support from specialist doctors, clinical fellows and residents including full support from a specialist ophthalmic nursing team.

You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in Ophthalmology or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our five-day Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust. Leadership is a key requirement of doctors' professional work and this innovative programme is designed to support Consultants to hone the leadership and management skills they need to succeed at CUH.

About us

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC's Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications.

Job responsibilities

The Department of Ophthalmology benefits from a hospital-wide electronic patient record (Epic) which makes Addenbrookes Hospital a digitally advanced Trust. This digital system helps to improve patient care and provides opportunities for audit evaluations and research projects. Addenbrookes Hospital also provides outstanding facilities for research with opportunities for close collaboration between medical specialties.

The Cambridge Eye Research Centre (CERC) provides the research infrastructure for ophthalmology studies within the Department of Ophthalmology. The glaucoma service has a well-established clinical research programme supported by the Cambridge Eye Research Centre (CERC). Miss Tasneem Khatib is a co-Director of CERC as well an academic consultant with a research team based in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching activities of the department. There is a well-established regional teaching programme for specialist trainees in ophthalmology in the East of England.
