Job summary

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Ophthalmologist to join our Eye Department at Torbay Hospital, Torquay. The role includes general and specialist clinics, cataract surgery, and a 1 in 8 on-call commitment.

We welcome Higher Trainees ready to advance or established consultants seeking a career change. Shared office space and secretarial support are provided, with flexible full-time or part-time hours in a dynamic NHS setting.

Qualifications

• FRCOphth or equivalent.
• Full GMC Registration with licence to practice.
• IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School.
• English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent).
• Name on Specialist Register by date of interview or within 6 months of CCT.

Responsibilities

• Offer expert clinical opinions on ophthalmic problems, emergency and elective.
• Independent running of operating lists and teaching cataract surgery.
• Take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
• Prioritise clinical needs and supervise multi-disciplinary teams.
• Lead clinical teams and contribute to governance and teaching.
• Communicate with local GPs and participate in audits.

Education
