Job overview

The aim is to appoint a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with a special interest in acute and general gynaecology to join the established team at University Hospitals Sussex (UHSussex). We are looking for a capable and enthusiastic colleague who will contribute towards the development of the acute gynaecology services at the RSCH site and general gynaecology and obstetric services over the next decade and beyond.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at UHSussex spans across 4 sites – Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH), Brighton, Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), Haywards Heath, Worthing Hospital, Worthing & St Richards Hospital, Chichester and also includes satellite sites at Lewes Victoria Hospital, Lewes and Southlands Hospital, Shoreham by Sea.

This job will be predominantly based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, but will include some activity at other sites. Elective in-patient and day-case gynaecological surgery occurs predominantly at the PRH, whilst tertiary referral gynaecological oncology surgery takes place at the RSCH. Outpatient clinical activity occurs in both hospitals with the majority of outpatient activity being based at the newly opened gynaecology outpatient centre at PRH. Additional gynaecological outpatient and operating activity is undertaken at Lewes Victoria Hospital in Lewes and Southlands Hospital, Shoreham by Sea.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a skilled and experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist with excellent skills and experience in managing complex and general gynaecological conditions including complex obstetric and gynaecological emergencies.

The candidate should have experience in laparoscopic and open abdominal surgery as well as experience in ultrasound scanning and hysteroscopy.

Previous involvement in service development and quality & safety initiatives are also desirable.

The clinical duties of the post include the following:

  • Support the acute gynaecology and early pregnancy services at the RSCH site
  • Run general gynaecology outpatient, outpatient hysteroscopy and dedicated scan clinics
  • Support the recurrent miscarriage service
  • Support the faster diagnostics service
  • Continue to develop the same day hysterectomy pathways and implementation of GIRFT within gynaecology services
  • Undertake inpatient and day case theatre lists in general gynaecology
  • Undertake patient triage and advice and guidance
  • To participate in the on call rota for obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Support the provision of safe obstetric and gynaecology on-call services.
  • Contribution to undergraduate and postgraduate education and supervision including ATSM and SITM training.
  • To be actively involved in service development and innovation
  • To actively support and engage with ongoing research themes and projects
  • To contribute to complaint & incident management as well as clinical administration

Qualifications

  • • MRCOG or its recognised equivalent.
  • • Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC or be eligible for registration within six months of the interview. • If you trained in the UK, you must also have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in [Obstetrics and Gynaecology] or be within six months of receiving it by the interview date. • If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. (Equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
  • • Benign Abdominal Surgery: open and laparoscopic ATSM, Gynaecological Surgical care SITM or Acute gynaecology ATSM or equivalent fellowship experience

Clinical Skills and Experience

  • • Expertise and skills in complex benign gynaecological procedures
  • • Expertise and skills in managing acute obstetrics
  • • Evidence in training and experience in minimally invasive surgery
