NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.

To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.

Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.

Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in St Johns Hospital.

To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service.

As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre-settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, please refer to the websitehere.

For specific types of post, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible (though not guaranteed) to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licenced Sponsor, and if the post does not fall below the current minimum salary threshold or going rate. Further information on these criteria can be foundhere.

It is ESSENTIAL that you have checked that you either already have an appropriate right to work in the UK or that the post would be eligible to be sponsoredBEFORE submitting your application form.

This post is a Consultant post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology based at St Johns Hospital, Livingston. It is available from October 2025.

The successful applicant should be able to contribute to both Obstetrics and Gynaecology and must be able to work flexibly to address service pressures and priorities as they arise in either area.

The job plan will be 10 programmed activities (PA) per week which will include one programmed activity for clinical administration (Admin) and one supporting professional activity (SPA) session as is the standard arrangement for new posts in Scotland.

The post will include consultant sessions on labour ward, a hot week of ward cover and emergency gynaecology (may occur on either site) (1:10), obstetrics and gynaecology theatre sessions and outpatient clinics in obstetrics and gynaecology. The successful applicant should have interest in areas that complement those of the existing Consultant staff. The out of hours is non-resident on call for obstetrics and gynaecology at St Johns 1:10 with prospective cover.
