Position: Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist (Clinical Lead)

Location: Gilbert Bain Hospital, Shetland, United Kingdom

Employer: NHS Scotland

Contract: Flexible Part-Time, 30 weeks per annum

Salary Range: £111,430 - £148,064 per annum (pro rata)

Job Description

Join the Shetland healthcare team to develop obstetric and gynaecology services in a remote setting. The role involves providing clinical leadership, working on a rota in Shetland, and maintaining skills through part-time work with a preferred NHS Trust. The post includes responsibilities for low to medium risk obstetrics, gynaecological services, and leadership in policy adherence and best practices.

Candidates will undertake a minimum of 17 weeks of clinical practice in Shetland, divided into 4-week blocks, with additional time allocated for leave, professional development, and sub-specialty interests. The role offers a reasonable on-call commitment, with remuneration aligned with the Scottish Consultant Scale at 0.57WTE, and support for training, travel, and accommodation.

Shetland handles approximately 200 deliveries annually, with local facilities for elective caesarean sections, high-risk follow-up via telehealth, and emergency retrieval by air ambulance. The team comprises multidisciplinary professionals including midwives, anesthetists, and surgeons.
