Job description

We are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join the Department of Neurosurgery.

The Department has 14 substantive Consultant Neurosurgeons and is part of the wider Directorate of Neurosciences, which also includes Neurology, Neurophysiology, and the national highly specialised Mitochondrial Medicine Service, providing comprehensive, specialist services to a population of approximately 2.4 million across North East and Cumbria.

The Newcastle Department of Neurosurgery is renowned for clinical excellence, high throughput, and active research. It offers a full range of clinical neurosciences with excellent neurological and diagnostic facilities.

Role Purpose

The post aims to contribute to the regional neurosurgical service for patients with neurological disorders. The appointee will work with current neurosurgeons to deliver comprehensive care, participate in elective and emergency services, and join a team specialising in skull base surgery.

Responsibilities
  1. Provide independent clinical care for patients at the Regional Neurosciences Centre.
  2. Undertake administrative duties related to patient care and departmental management.
  3. Contribute to the general neurosurgical service, including on-call duties and out-of-hours work.
  4. Participate in the subspecialist skull base surgery service.
  5. Engage in outpatient clinics, operating sessions, pre-operative assessments, and ward rounds as per the job plan.
  6. Allocate 1.5 SPA sessions for administration, audit, research, and teaching, with scope for additional duties.
  7. Participate in clinical governance, audits, and multidisciplinary activities.
  8. Assist in NHSLA assessments and investigations of complaints.
Additional Information

The role involves working across multiple hospital sites, including Freeman Hospital, RVI, and others, delivering innovative and high-standard care supported by advanced diagnostic services. The job advert closes on Friday, 16 May 2025.
