Job summary

Cygnet Taunton is seeking a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist to provide senior medical cover on Blackbird Ward, an inpatient pathway for adults with complex neurocognitive conditions. You will be the Responsible Clinician and lead MDT clinical governance and audits.

You will oversee patient care, engage families and staff, and contribute to CPD and teaching, while maintaining high professional standards and liaising with the Hospital Manager.

Qualifications

  • Fully GMC registered and MBBS or equivalent.
  • Registered on specialist register (CCT/CESR) and AC status.
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and codes.
  • Excellent communication and medical documentation.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on high quality care for Blackbird ward patients.
  • Model professional behavior toward patients, families and staff.
  • Oversee treatment plans with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Assess referrals and perform mental state examinations.
  • Investigate, diagnose and treat patients.
  • Conduct ward rounds, reviews and audits.
  • Lead risk assessment and clinical governance.
  • Supervise Mental Health Act tribunal reports and hearings.
  • Liaise with Ministry of Justice for transfers and leave approvals.
  • Maintain patient records and effective communication with senior staff.
  • Participate in CPD and GMC-compliant activities.
  • Contribute to the on-call rota.

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant Neuropsychiatrist who will work at Cygnet Taunton and provide senior medical cover on Blackbird Ward, our 16 bed male service offering a specialist inpatient pathway for adults with complex neurocognitive conditions and the resulting psychiatric challenges they face. The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines. Our pathway serves men previously stuck in a cycle of placement breakdowns or long-term hospitalisation. By combining neuropsychiatry, neurorehabilitation, and complex nursing, we offer a cohesive, clinically led alternative. Our interdisciplinary team works directly with families and health professionals to deliver truly integrated support. In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

Main duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead on the provision of high quality care to the service users admitted to Blackbird ward
  • Act as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Assess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis & treatment
  • Conduct ward rounds, patient reviews & clinical audits
  • Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management & embed clinical governance within the service
  • Supervise reports for Mental Health Act tribunals & managers’ hearings & attend hearings
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Justice for transfer of patients and approval of leave as required
  • Good maintenance of patient records
  • To ensure and maintain regular communications with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager
  • To communicate effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors, and any other concerned bodies; maintaining appropriate reports.
  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to the professional standards for CPD as set out by the GMC, the Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Contribute to the On call rota

We’re looking for someone who is…
  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status
  • Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, along with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity
  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
  • Committed to continued professional development
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent
Requirements

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS and reference check and an offer of employment will be subject to successful clearance.
