Main duties of the job

As a Consultant Neurologist, you will:

• Deliver high-quality general neurology services across Somerset
• Develop and lead a subspecialty service in your area of expertise
• Provide outpatient care across multiple hospital sites
• Take part in inpatient neurology care at Musgrove Park Hospital, including ward referrals
• Work closely with a diverse MDT to deliver seamless patient care
• Engage in teaching, research, and clinical trials supported by the Clinical Research Network
• Participate in the duty neurologist rota, which ensures a dedicated inpatient focus with no outpatient clinics scheduled during duty weeks

You'll be working alongside:

• 6 substantive consultants
• Expanding registrar team (increasing to 2 from August)
• Specialist MDT including headache practitioners, epilepsy nurse specialists, MS nurse specialists, neuro-pharmacist, consultant physiotherapist, and clinical psychologists
• Neurosurgery & interventional neuroradiology at Southmead Hospital, Bristol
• Virtual neuroradiology MDT & weekly neurology academic meetings

You'll have full secretarial, IT, and office support, with dedicated on-site office space (potentially shared with another consultant).

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

• Full GMC registration with a license to practice
• CCT in Neurology (or within six months of completion at the time of interview)

Desirable:

• Subspecialty expertise (epilepsy preferred), experience in teaching & research.

Experience

Essential:

• Ability to work independently as a general neurologist
• Commitment to teamwork, patient care, and service development

Additional Criteria

Essential:

• Ability to prioritise clinical need
• Ability to effectively organise oneself and own work
• Evidence of participation in clinical audit
• Ability to take a lead in developing/managing a clinical area

Desirable:

• Demonstrate wide awareness of issues in health care
