Job summary

The Oxford Kidney Unit provides a comprehensive portfolio of both tertiary and secondary services based in Oxford with a co-provider structure delivering dialysis services in Milton Keynes, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, Swindon and Banbury. The Renal medicine service provides dialysis, general nephrology and acute renal failure services on a regional basis serving a population of approximately 1.7 million. It provides a specialist as well as general nephrology service to the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Wiltshire and to parts of other surrounding counties. The Renal service has benefited from a well-established and stable network commissioning framework based on a realistic and soundly evaluated expectation of the growth of clinical demand.

The Oxford Kidney Unit currently treats 654 dialysis patients (99 PD, 25 home haemodialysis) and >1400 transplant recipients under follow up; in 2023 there were 238 transplants (this includes kidney, SKPT, islets, pancreas alone and bowel transplants). There are about 300 native and transplant biopsies per annum.

Main duties of the job

This is a consultant replacement post joining the existing Oxford Kidney Unit team of nephrologists providing around 8000 outpatient appointments per month and leading care for 650 patients on dialysis across 7 locations. The postholder will be primarily based in Oxford, with a commitment for outpatient clinic and satellite dialysis cover in Milton Keynes.This post will provide a consultant-led outpatient service, primarily based at the Churchill Hospital. The postholder may also be involved in the renal procedures service. There will be on-call component of this role, with current prospective rota (1:12) covering renal inpatients at the Churchill Hospital. The postholder will have a caseload of dialysis patients and transplantation follow-up patients in Oxford and Milton Keynes.

Facilities for study and training:Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (OUHNHSFT) is a teaching hospital Trust, as such there will be opportunities for study and training, to be agreed once appointed.

Teaching, audit and research:The post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
