The Consultant Midwife will use midwifery expertise to promote clinical pathways in maternity care leading midwifery practice within all areas of maternity services.


In the role they will lead and support midwives to realise their full potential as autonomous practitioners placing women and their families at the centre of care planning.


The post holder will act as an innovator, motivator, key change agent and role model, with a high level of autonomy in order to support and influence the clinical pathways within the midwifery services including implementation of national initiatives, service reconfiguration and appropriate models of care. The successful candidate will facilitate and enhance birthing choices.

To fulfil this varied role, you will need a flexible approach, an ability to 'think outside the box' and a willingness to not only embrace but lead on system wide changes in practice.


You will work closely with the Associate Director of Midwifery, Group Director of Midwifery, Consultant Midwives, Midwifery Matrons, Obstetric, Anaesthetic and Neonatal Teams to develop a Maternity Service that is responsive to the needs of women and its staff working alongside Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnership (MNVP).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care in practice. S/he will provide advanced clinical skills and advice demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of women in all situations. S/he will monitor and lead improvements to standards of care through, evidence based practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership. S/he will lead the implementation of relevant research into practice contributing to the further development of the evidence base through research and audit. S/he will be a key member of achieving the maternity governance objectives, within the areas of intrapartum midwifery care, addressing health inequalities, education and research.
