This is a replacement post for a medically qualified appointee at the Consultant level to join a clinical infection team comprising 5.5 consultants (4.5 medical and 1 clinical scientist), 1 Specialist Doctor, 1 senior clinical fellow, 1 junior clinical fellow, and 1 Foundation Year 2 (FY2) doctor. The team is supported by 51 laboratory staff, including a Head Biomedical Scientist, three Chief Biomedical Scientists, two Clinical Scientists, two trainee Clinical Scientists, six Senior Biomedical Scientists, and additional technical staff.
The Trust operates across three main sites: William Harvey Hospital (Ashford), Kent & Canterbury Hospital (Canterbury), and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (Margate). The microbiology laboratory is based at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, but Clinical Microbiology services function across all three sites. Each site has a dedicated Clinical Microbiology team, including 1 Consultant and 1 Clinical Fellow.
The appointee, along with consultant colleagues, will be responsible for providing a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective microbiology, virology, and infection prevention and control service to EKHUFT and other users. Opportunities to specialise and lead in particular infectious disease areas will be available.
Responsibilities include direct clinical care, proactive liaison with hospital staff, microbiology colleagues, infectious disease and GUM physicians, respiratory physicians (for tuberculosis management), GPs, antibiotic pharmacists, infection prevention and control nurses, health protection consultants, and CCDC colleagues regarding diagnosis, management, and infection control. The role involves participation in a 'Microbiologist duty desk' rota, and commitments to units such as haemato/oncology, renal medicine, neurology, SCBU, orthopaedics, and daily ward rounds in intensive care and high dependency units.
We are one of the largest hospital trusts in England, serving a population of around 700,000 with three acute hospitals and community sites, and providing specialist services for Kent and Medway.
Kent and Medway Pathology Network: A formal partnership of seven laboratories across three pathology services in four trusts, serving nearly 2 million people. The network is developing a joint venture with projects including IT integration, procurement, and digital transformation. There are opportunities for career growth within the network, including a network academy for education and training. While you will primarily work within EKHUFT, collaborative working within the network is encouraged.
