Whether your interest is Sleep, Ventilation, Lung Cancer, or another subspecialty, we'll help you grow it — with access to Interventional Bronchoscopy (EBUS, Thoracoscopy) and strong support for ILD and Pleural services.

Main duties of the job

The main duties and responsibilities of the Consultants are:

  • To provide a high-quality service in Respiratory Medicine (& General Internal Medicine inpatients) to the patients, using evidence-based guidelines & clinical governance structures.
  • Offer advice & support to medical, nursing, managerial & other staff on appropriate matters.
  • Carry out medical teaching, examination & accreditation duties
  • To participate in the formal appraisal of junior medical staff
  • Contribute to postgraduate & continuing medical education including Continuing Professional Development.
  • Participate in medical audit & develop relevant audit projects.
  • Provide information for service development & management purposes to support job planning, etc
  • Contribute to the management process through participation in planning, project or liaison groups as appropriate.
  • Support the Directorate with appropriate advice with regard to the development of Respiratory Medicine & Medical services at WVT.
  • Participate fully in mandatory training as required & also in annual appraisal, job planning & revalidation procedures.

As a Senior Leader within the Trust, we are looking for motivated & forward-thinking engaging Clinical staff to work within the teams to develop & encourage this new way of working.

Additional speciality or management PAs can be offered.

Job responsibilities
Management

The post holder will contribute to the smooth running of hospital services as a whole, including interaction with management structures of the Directorate, the wider Trust, and external stakeholders as necessary.

The successful applicant will develop new clinical models of care for acute medical patients, influencing the Herefordshire Public Health strategy.

Additionally, there will be an expectation to:

  • Participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings within the framework of the Trust and Department strategy
  • Attend other departmental, Divisional, and Trust meetings as necessary
Supervision and Training

Educational and clinical supervision of doctors in Training and Allied Health professionals is a core role. The post holder will actively participate in training and teaching sessions and contribute to training events across the Trust and beyond.

Continuing Professional Development, Mentorship, Induction

CPD is essential, with participation in meetings, audits, and academic events. New staff will be supported with mentorship and induction programs. The post holder will participate in annual job planning and appraisal, ensuring revalidation readiness.

Research & Audit

The post holder will contribute to audit and quality improvement projects, with encouragement for research interests and involvement in clinical trials if available.

Daily ward presence and in-reach ensure early specialist assessment of new admissions.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with license to practice, and on the specialist register in Respiratory Medicine
  • Experience in Acute Medicine / GIM with proven skills and up-to-date experience
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register for G(I)M and Respiratory Medicine via CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date within 6 months of interview), CESR, or European Rights
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent

Desirable

  • Additional degrees, diplomas, or postgraduate theses relevant to the specialty

Clinical Experience

  • Equivalent clinical training and experience for UK CCT in general and respiratory medicine
  • Ability to offer expert opinions on emergency and elective problems within the specialty
  • Full responsibility for patient care

Desirable

  • Current ALS certification or equivalent
  • Experience in a specialist interest that complements other staff
  • Leadership and organization experience in community settings
