Applications are invited for enthusiastic and committed Consultants to join our dynamic and innovative team at St George's Paediatric Emergency Department. St Georges Hospital (SGH) is a designated major trauma centre, hyperacute stroke centre and arrhythmia centre. We receive 155,000 new ED attendances a year, of which 35,000 are children. We are a tertiary referral centre for specialist care including neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology and cardiac surgery, cancer, maxillofacial surgery, plastics, ENT and paediatrics.
Currently there are 24 Emergency Medicine Consultants, of whom six have sub-speciality Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) accreditation. We run a very successful annualised, self-rostered Consultant rota which allows for great flexibility and work-life balance.
Applicants must have full registration with the General Medicine Council (or eligible if currently working overseas) and be on the specialist register for Emergency Medicine. Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine or equivalent is essential.
The ED is a regional training centre for Adult and Paediatric Emergency Medicine. We currently run a full doctor rota with 78 junior clinicians made up of doctors, physician associates and advanced care practitioners. 12 of our doctors are at ST4+ level and ten at ST/CT3 level. We host trainees from HEE London and HEE Kent, Surrey and Sussex. We have a highly successful training and mentorship program for clinical fellows and international emergency trainees.
Our department has undergone a large refurbishment project in the last two years with a new streaming and triage area, improved resus room, near doubling of our majors capacity, and two new dedicated rooms for patients with mental health illness. Our new UTC is currently being built and will open later this year. We have a group of in-house GPs who provide a 08.00-21.00 service and Emergency Practitioners who work 07.30-02.00.
The ED Clinical Research Unit is one of the highest recruiters to NIHR studies nationally. We have a well-developed infrastructure including the provision of ED research nurses 14 hours a day who are led by one of Consultant Nurses. Several of the EM Consultants are principal investors and research is actively encouraged and facilitated.
