The Ophthalmology Department has the opportunity to recruit a full-time consultant with a specialist interest in Glaucoma to join our multidisciplinary team providing optimal care.

The Ophthalmology Department has shared community schemes, integration with optometrists, expanded roles for nurses and other non-medical health care professionals, and a high level of clinical research that has shaped improvements in the eye care nationally over many years. The department firmly believes in investing in a strong IT infrastructure to develop innovative ways to meet capacity demands including virtual clinics.

Main duties of the job

Following the merger of Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals with Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon, there is an opportunity to recruit a full time Consultant, who specialises in Glaucoma, to join a multidisciplinary team providing optimal care.

The Trust provides comprehensive Ophthalmology care for the Huntingdon, Stamford, Peterborough, Ely and Fenland areas and also receive some referrals from the wider region. This post will have sessions at any of the 3 hospitals under North West Anglia Foundation Trust with also an on call commitment in the job plan.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The appointee will be also responsible for contributing to and coordinating the training of medical staff, hospital based optometrists and orthoptic staff who work in NWAFTs Glaucoma Ophthalmology service.
  • The appointee has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the service, allowing for all appropriate delegation to and training for his/her staff.
  • He/she is responsible for the day-to-day management of his/her clinics and must ensure that in/out patient services are covered during his/her planned absences.
  • Participation in episodes of shared care requires the consultant to provide advice and support to clinicians in other services with regard to patients who may have a combination of ocular problems.
  • All members of the consultant staff are expected to contribute to the Medical Advisory committee, and to serve on other Hospital committees as required, unless compelling reasons prevent this.
  • All members of consultant staff and honorary consultants are expected to participate in clinical governance and audit, to meet annual training requirements, and to satisfy the annual requirements for continuous professional development as set out by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. All consultant staff will participate in the Trusts Appraisal Scheme

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCOphth
  • CCT or equivalent in Ophthalmology and/or inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC or within six months of AAC
  • Full GMC Registration with License to Practice

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical Fellowship experience or equivalent
  • High degree of surgical (if operating) and clinical skills
  • Teaching at post and undergraduate levels

Academic Achievements

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate successful participation in audit
  • Evidence of completed and published research
  • Instigated, designed and completed audit projects and protocols

Desirable

  • Evidence of having supervised and supported research
