Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with interest in Orthognathic and TMJ

We are seeking applications from enthusiastic individuals to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) team as a 10 programmed activity (PA). The OMFS team forms part of the Dental Networked Services at Barts Health. This is an ideal career opportunity for anyone who is looking for a challenging opportunity to develop their existing skills, and to provide a first-class service to patients.

The role is very busy and will include outpatient management, local and general anaesthetic treatment lists, management of theatre cases (including relevant ward, discharge and post-operative management), supporting service colleagues with management of 18-week RTT and urgent suspected cancer pathways, managing clinical governance processes as required within the OMFS department, delivery of service improvements and planning with operational and nursing colleagues and working closely with senior colleagues and clinicians to deliver exemplary care for our patients. The role will join the consultant on-call rota 1 in 8.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an individual with an interest and experience in TMJ and orthognathic surgery. The role will be based across the Royal London Dental Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital.

The Royal London Dental Hospitals offers a range of specialist Level 3 dental, ophthalmology and oral and maxillofacial services to North-East London. The OMFS team offer specialist trauma, TMJ, orthognathic, soft tissue and salivary gland services.

Qualifications
  • Full registration and a license to practice with the United Kingdom General Medical Council (GMC)
  • MBBS and BDS or equivalent qualifications
  • FDSRCS and FRCS(OMFS) or equivalent qualifications
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
  • Eligible for full General Dental Council (GDC) registration
  • Peer reviewed clinical research publications
  • Hold full General Dental Council (GDC) registration
  • Formal teaching or relevant postgraduate qualification
  • PhD or equivalent
  • ATLS
Experience
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery experience to ST7+ or consultant level
  • Experience of working in a Level 1 trauma oral and maxillofacial surgery on-call service
  • Evidence of paediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery training
  • Validated to date logbook (submitted with application)
  • Experience in clinical audit
Knowledge
  • Detailed knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of clinical audit and demonstratable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
  • Understanding of the NHS including financial and operational pressures
  • Understanding of national waiting time targets (Referral to Treatment and Urgent Suspected Cancer)
Skills
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems relating to oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of oral and maxillofacial surgery patients
  • Ability to run a smooth, efficient oral and maxillofacial surgery service for both inpatients and outpatients
  • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets
  • Interest in research, with evidence of peer reviewed publications
  • Change management and quality improvement
