Job description

Job Title: Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry

Grade: Consultant

Location: Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

Working Hours: 40 hours per week

Rate: Competitive — details to be discussed upon application

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry to join our NHS client in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. This role combines leadership in an inpatient setting with collaborative work across the Community Mental Health Team (CMHT), offering a dynamic and rewarding opportunity for a skilled psychiatrist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership and psychiatric care for older adults in an inpatient setting.
  • Act as an Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act, including responsibilities for detention, treatment, and discharge planning.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and treatment planning for patients with complex mental health conditions such as dementia, depression, and psychosis.
  • Collaborate closely with the CMHT to ensure continuity of care and effective discharge planning.
  • Supervise junior doctors and contribute to their training and development.
  • Participate in clinical governance, service development, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Engage with families, carers, and external agencies to ensure holistic, person-centred care.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry (or within 6 months of CCT)
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Extensive experience in inpatient psychiatry and community mental health services
  • Strong leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
