This is an exciting opportunity for a substantive Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology with a special interest in high risk Obstetrics.

We are looking for an outstanding colleague who will complement and enhance our obstetric and gynaecology services. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership in the high risk obstetric service, including multiple pregnancy, small for gestational age and developing specific rainbow clinics to support women who have previous poor obstetric histories and possess competencies in obstetric scanning.

This is an exciting time to join the Countess within the Women and Children’s Division as we look to move into our new state of the art purpose-built facility in the Summer of 2025.

Additional responsibilities within Obstetrics will include leading a high risk antenatal clinic and a pre and post pregnancy counselling service along with the other Consultants with an interest in high risk pregnancies as well as development in areas of Obstetric interest depending on the candidates skills and departmental needs.

It is also expected that the successful candidate would take an active role in the various local, regional and national quality and safety agendas.

The post could include an optional gynaecology component dependent on the skills of the successful candidate and in line with the department’s requirements. This would most likely be ambulatory/outpatient gynaecology or emergency gynaecology. Support for the on call gynaecology component of the role could be available where required.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the non-resident 3rd on call rota, which is currently 1 in 12.

Although this job is suitable for a general Obstetrics and Gynaecology consultant, we are keen to prioritise someone with a high risk obstetrics interest, with obstetric scanning competencies.

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

• The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
• Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
• Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
  
  

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
