A leading healthcare provider in Oxford is seeking a Consultant in Obstetric Medicine to manage maternal medicine inpatients and lead multi-disciplinary clinics. The ideal candidate will have relevant qualifications, excellent leadership, and communication skills, along with an interest in teaching and research. This position will also involve contributing to clinical governance and professional development. The role offers a less than full-time contract of 4 PA (0.4 WTE).

The post-holder’s duties will primarily be in the Women’s Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, with possible clinic sessions at other regional units. The Maternal Medicine Service provides a mixed secondary/tertiary service to Oxfordshire and a tertiary service as the Maternal Medicine Centre for the Thames Valley Maternal Medicine Network, covering Buckinghamshire, East and West Berkshire, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire and adjacent parts of Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, serving a population approaching 3 million. There are approximately 7,500 births per year throughout the Trust and about 40,000 births per year in the Thames Valley Network footprint.
This is a less than full-time post of 4 PA (0.4 WTE).
The duties include multi-disciplinary antenatal and post-natal clinics, and a pre-conception clinic for women with medical problems, along with the management of maternal medicine inpatients.
The post-holder will have a desk in an office in Maternity alongside colleagues in the department. The office will be equipped with a personal computer with intranet access and Wi-Fi. Secretarial support will be provided accordingly.

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching hospital. The post-holder will be required to teach and examine clinical students.
It is anticipated that the post-holder will contribute to both departments’ research activities, and collaboration with clinicians and scientists in the Nuffield Department of Womens and Reproductive Health (NDWRH) is encouraged. The post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. It is anticipated that the post-holder will be awarded the title of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in the University of Oxford and affiliation to NDWRH for contribution to teaching clinical students and supervising postgraduate research. Teaching in obstetric medicine is expected as the Trust is an accredited obstetric medicine training centre. There is an obstetric medicine registrar, two RCOG subspecialty registrars and the department offers training for the special skills module in obstetric medicine for acute medicine resident doctors. Opportunities exist to develop academic interests also.
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies. OUHFT supports continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians, with time and financial support for these activities. The post-holder will keep up to date with their area of practice and will be supported for study leave as per the Trust’s Terms and Conditions of Service. The Trust has arrangements for appraisal and revalidation following Royal College requirements.
The Maternal Medicine department supports OUH as a secondary obstetric unit with ~7,500 births per year and tertiary referral care for ~40,000 pregnant women in the Thames Valley network. Approximately 45 new patient appointments per week, 40 follow-ups, and about 15 inpatients are typical. The appointee will contribute to 24/7 maternal medicine on-call coverage (1 in 6, consultant of the week) with two other obstetric physicians and five consultant obstetricians with Maternal Medicine expertise. Two RCOG subspecialty trainees are typically on site.
The newly appointed consultant will be mentored by an experienced Maternal Medicine clinician.
