The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is a medium-sized acute and community trust with over 525 beds and over 600 community staff, serving more than 600,000 people living across Enfield and Haringey and the surrounding areas, including Barnet and Waltham Forest.
The hospital has been on its present site for over 100 years and was established as an NHS trust by statute in December 1990. The Trust’s services are provided on the North Middlesex University Hospital site as well as a range of community sites across the London Borough of Enfield, including at partner hospitals. They provide services in collaboration with a range of partners, including local GPs, acute, mental health and other community health service providers across North Central London.
In the year ending 31 March 2022, the Trust reported a turnover of £419.7m and employed almost 4,000 staff. Following the transfer of Enfield Community Services on 1st April 2023, this has increased as we have welcomed over 600 new staff including District Nurses, Community Matrons, Community Physiotherapists, Psychologists and many more across a wide range of adult and children’s community services in Enfield. We are seeking a Consultant in Medical Oncology with a specialist interest in breast malignancy to join our dynamic and supportive team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a well-established oncology service, with opportunities for service development, quality improvement initiatives, and research involvement. The post-holder will join the breast oncology team at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (RFL) on the North Mid Health Unit site as a 7.75 PA (less than full time) substantive consultant.
North Mid has recently merged with the Royal Free Group, it remains an activeDGH and Oncology treatment centre with a diverse communityin North London. The successful candidate would be employed by the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, to work at NMUH. The North Middlesex hospital oncology team 12 substantive oncology consultants.
The North Mid breast oncology team has 2 Medical Oncology Consultants (1 substantive and 1 locum i.e. this post is a replacement) and 1 Clinical Oncologist along with 3 Breast Clinical Nurse Specialists. There is an active local research department that is managed by the wider trust Research Governance team, based at Royal Free Health Unit in Hampstead.
Other Roles and Responsibilities
Consultants have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of their department. They are expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of their patients and the running of their clinical departments.
The appointee will be expected to take responsibility for maintaining their CPD.
Education and Training role
The North Middlesex University Hospital has gained a reputation for teaching excellence in the region due to our dedicated consultant teachers and a rich variety of clinical cases.
Formal teaching sessions are organised differently in various departments and there will be opportunity to be involved in training and teaching sessions.

This includes health visitors and school nurses who are delivering the national Healthy Child Programme, which provides a structured framework for the delivery of key interventions to support the health and wellbeing of children and families from 0 to 5 and school aged children from 5-19. The core responsibilities of the post holder will be as follows:
1. To develop and support the Breast medical oncology service at the North Middlesex Hospital
2. To attend the weekly tumour specific Breast MDTs
3. To take responsibility for the designated clinical workload including all relevant MDMs, out-patient clinics, and review and responsibility for in-patients.
4. To take part in clinical trials in breast cancer
5. To participate in the consultant on-call rota for oncology at North Middlesex Hospital (1 in 16)
6. To participate in the consultant led review of breast oncology inpatients on the North Middlesex Hospital.
7. Work with consultant colleagues and nursing staff to ensure efficient use of Trust’s resources and contribute actively to clinical governance in the department and to development of quality enhancement projects in the unit.
8. To provide postgraduate teaching for junior staff
9. To provide clinical supervision for specialist registrars
10. To participate in undergraduate medical student teaching
11. To comply with all the clinical governance processes and procedures of the Trust
12. Compliance with Patients’ Charter and Purchasers’ requirements
13. To lead and participate in medical audit as per Royal College of Physicians guidelines
14. To maintain Continuing Professional Development accreditation as per Royal College of Physicians guidelines
15. To participate in the Trust appraisal programme and GMC revalidation processes.
16. The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
