NHS Tayside seeks to appoint a Microbiology Consultant.
The post holder will join a team of seven other Consultants responsible for providing Bacteriology/Virology and Infection Prevention and Control services. The job plan will be offered as a 10 PA contract, with funding available for additional PAs.
The Department of Medical Microbiology has recently received significant investment in new technology and laboratory space and is a pioneer of automated molecular diagnostics in Scotland.
The department, situated in Ninewells Hospital, conducts over 325,000 investigations annually. It employs MALDI-TOF, BacTAlert, Vitek 2, and Cepheid GeneXpert in bacteriology, and Siemens Centaur, Diasorin Liaison, Hologic Panther, and SeeGene platforms in virology, alongside various real-time PCR assays. The LIMS (LabCentre) is linked to electronic test requesting (ICE). The department is UKAS accredited.
You will be responsible for providing diagnostic, treatment, and IPC advice across the health board area. The out-of-hours on-call rota is currently 1:7, with an availability supplement and on-call payment. There will be regular liaison with clinical areas including ICU, surgical HDU, orthopaedics, and Neonatology. The department includes two Specialist Trainee posts, four Higher Specialist Scientist Trainees, provides Core Infection Training, and has one pre-registration Clinical Scientist in training. Ninewells Hospital features a purpose-built Infectious Diseases unit with close links to ID.
The Infection Prevention and Control department is well-staffed with IPC nurses and administrative support. ICNET is interfaced with the LIMS. The post will include a commitment to IPC, with the balance of direct clinical care and supporting professional activities to be discussed and agreed upon with the successful applicant.
NHS Tayside supports continuous professional development, and all posts include 2 PAs for supporting professional activities.

Applicants should have full GMC registration, a license to practice, and be on the specialist register or within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or CESR (CP) at the time of interview. Those with appropriate specialist training and experience but not listed on the GMC Specialist Register may be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive appointment is made. During locum employment, candidates can apply to obtain a CESR and join the Specialist Register.
