Job description

We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Histopathology on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Histopathology department.

Our Client's Department of Cellular Pathology encompasses Histopathology and Cytopathology. It was formed in 1993 following an amalgamation of two previous separate Departments. The Department of Cellular Pathology provides a diagnostic service for the NHS Trust and local General Practitioners. The annual workload consists of approximately:

  1. 28,000 Surgical Histopathology specimens (of which approx. 20% are from GPs)
  2. 450 Post Mortems (mainly coronial cases)
  3. 2,500 Non-gynaecological Cytology specimens (including 2,000 fine needle aspirates)

The appointee will be asked to fulfil various duties, which include:

  1. Participating in the general diagnostic surgical pathology rota, having nominal responsibility for reporting one day in every seven.
  2. Supervising the reporting of the junior medical staff.
  3. Maintaining one or two subspecialist interests (preferably Head and Neck, Thyroid, Haematopathology, and Medical Liver) complementing those of the other consultants.
  4. Being responsible for clinical liaison and participating in multidisciplinary meetings in these areas.
  5. Attending appropriate cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings as the lead or deputy pathologist.
  6. Participating in appropriate external quality assurance (EQA) schemes and relevant clinical audits.
  7. Reporting one sixth of the non-gynaecological cytology workload in conjunction with the other 5 Consultants who undertake cytology.
  8. Supervising the non-Gynae cytology work reported by the registrars on an equitable basis.
  9. Participating in the audit, managerial, and educational activities of the Department.
