Job description

An opportunity has arisen for a consultant to join our enthusiastic and progressive Older Person’s Unit (OPU). This part-time post offers experience working on the OPU wards, with our MDT Acute Frailty team providing rapid CGA for SDEC and new admissions, and the chance to work with Hospital at Home. The post is also specifically designed to support movement disorders within an outpatient setting.

We have a strong focus on quality improvement, actively participating in the hospital-wide Improving Together programme. The department comprises 5 wards, 22 consultants, 5 SpRs, numerous trainees, and 14 medical nurse practitioners and advanced care practitioners. Consultants have research interests and teach undergraduates from Bristol Medical School. We encourage involvement in service development and other aspects of geriatric medicine. There is a separate Geriatric Medical take, with post holders sharing responsibilities on weekdays. Consultants work 1 in 6 weekends (one full day and one half-day, with no on-call duties), either at the front door or reviewing ward patients with nurse practitioners.

Candidates must possess or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT in Geriatric Medicine.

This post is tailored to support outpatient movement disorders, with roles in inpatient work and out-of-hours cover. Inpatient work is organized into blocks of 5 DCC, running Monday to Wednesday or Wednesday to Friday, to enhance continuity and cross-cover.

You will collaborate with colleagues to ensure daily senior decision-making for patients. Opportunities exist to review job plans to optimize continuity, patient flow, and job satisfaction.

You will support resident doctors and skilled medical nurse practitioners (all prescribers or working towards it), ensuring sustainable staffing and training focus.

Some posts include sessions as part of the ‘Frailty Flying Squad,’ delivered as a 5-8 pm session each weekday evening (frequency 1 in 10 pro-rata).

A daily ward round reviews new frailty admissions, with no out-of-hours on-call commitments for this post.

Weekends are worked on a 1 in 8 (pro-rata) basis, with two consultants providing short or long day cover daily.

During working hours, all consultants support a telephone Advice and Guidance service via ‘Cinapsis,’ capable of delivering and recording information.
