Job description
Consultant – General and Laparoscopic Surgery

The opportunity is for a General and Laparoscopic Surgeon to join the General Surgery Team based at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, located in the south of Scotland.

The Department of Surgery provides a comprehensive elective and emergency general surgical service, with day case/endoscopy/out-patient services also provided at the Galloway Community Hospital in Stranraer.

You will be joining a team of 14 Consultants (including this role) and will contribute to the ongoing development of general and laparoscopic surgery as well as participate in the 1:8 emergency on-call rota. Skill in endoscopy is required and experience in advanced laparoscopic surgery is highly desirable.

This is a great opportunity to join a very supportive and inclusive department. Working at our modern district general hospital, you will have access to state-of-the-art integrated operating theatres. The department is proud of its teaching reputation and the hospital has a well-equipped Education centre that includes a simulation laboratory. There is also an enthusiastic and active Research Department.

Dumfries is a great place to relocate to, well located for access to Scottish cities such as Glasgow and Edinburgh, and just a short drive from Carlisle in the north of England.

The region offers beautiful countryside, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to forests, hills and rolling plains. The hospital was designed with this landscape in mind. There is a wide range of activities on offer, with water sports, fishing, bird watching, golf, mountain-biking or cycling along the network of rural roads and much more. House prices are low, schools are good and you are within 2 hours of Edinburgh, Glasgow, the Lake District and Newcastle.

Prospective candidates will require to be on the GMC Specialist Register.

We welcome informal contact from prospective candidates who wish to better understand the role.
