Job Description:

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for ambitious and committed Consultants. The expansion of the existing Consultant workforce will allow us to develop new and innovative approaches in the delivery of patient care that meet an increasing demand for our services. We are seeking to appoint motivated and enthusiastic colleagues to work with the team in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The posts will provide a unique and exciting opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of the service. Situated on the beautiful Clyde Coast, Ayrshire & Arran is a great place to live and work. There is a wealth of beaches, golf courses, bustling market towns, and stunning scenery to explore, yet University Hospital Crosshouse is still within 35 minutes’ drive from the heart of the city Glasgow.

The successful candidates will be based at University Hospital Crosshouse.

The post-holders can expect to see a wide range of clinical presentations with a broad range of specialist services across NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The Service functions as an integrated team and all members contribute towards the provision of out-patient and in-patient care. The duties of the post are biased towards the provision of specialist out-patient activity in Renal medicine. The post also includes an ongoing commitment to the supervision of in-patient general medical patients, receiving duties in the Combined Assessment Unit, and participation in the out of hours medical on-call rota (1:7 weekends and 1:21 nights).

There is an active programme of postgraduate education in which all doctors are invited and encouraged to participate. Appropriate time, support, and development will be provided to allow the successful individual to flourish and realize their professional and personal ambitions and to shape the future clinical service.

The terms and conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004. The posts are offered on a 10 programmed activity basis initially (including 2 SPAs), but opportunities may exist for Extra Programmed Activities to be undertaken subject to service requirements and in accordance with national terms and conditions of service. Applications from individuals who may wish to work on a part-time or job share basis will be considered.

The post holders will also provide ongoing leadership and training in the expansion of innovative training posts that are community facing which offer exciting opportunities for doctors within the GP training programme and Clinical Development Fellows to work at the interface between Acute, Community, and Primary Care Services, within a multi-disciplinary team.

NHS Ayrshire and Arran have built a new and supportive development programme for new consultants which provides additional management training to those in their first Consultant post. There is also a strong focus on staff wellbeing within the Board.

Accredited in Renal Medicine, you will have the necessary training and expertise to provide a range of expertise for patients in Ayrshire to meet the needs of this new role. Candidates must be fully registered with a Licence to Practice and must be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or CESR at the time of interview.

For further information about the post, or to arrange an informal visit, please contact Dr Aileen Helps 01563 825177 (email protected), or Dr Elaine Spalding Associate Medical Director, University Hospital Crosshouse 01292 614819 (email protected).

Mrs Debbie Hardie, Divisional General Manager Medicine NHS Ayrshire & Arran, would also welcome the opportunity to discuss the post in more detail and can be contacted on 01563 827072.

Application in the form of a current CV with evidence to support your entry onto the Specialist Register/CCT date together with the names and addresses of 2 referees (postal and email) including your current and most recent Clinical Director/Lead Consultant, and completed Sections 1-6, should be submitted to (email protected) no later than 2nd June 2025 (noon). Please Quote Ref No: 213742. Interviews anticipated 16th June 2025.
