Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join us, forming part of a high-calibre consultant peer group in the heart of London and working in an established multidisciplinary Community Mental Health Team in North Westminster.

This is a full-time, 10 sessions per week, Consultant role, with an additional APA Division Medical Lead role available for suitable candidates (see secondary JD attached).

Main duties of the job

This position is within the North Westminster Mental Health Hub, particularly the Regent’s Health community mental health PCN team. The post holder will have consultant and RC responsibility for service users in the Regent’s health PCN team, supervising 2 Specialty doctors (total of 1.5 specialty doctor resource).

The post holder will report to the Westminster Clinical Director, Dr. Sujaa Mary Rajagopal Arokiadass.

  • Provide senior medical responsibility for the team’s patients and support multidisciplinary team members.
  • Support recruitment and retention, uphold morale.
  • Ensure service quality and performance.
  • Support GPs and primary care clinicians in mental health care provision.
  • Collaborate with voluntary sector partners to support patient care.
  • Meet training needs of psychiatry trainees and junior clinical staff.

Working for our organisation

The post is within Jameson Division in CNWL, covering mental health services in Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Brent, and Harrow. Westminster adult mental health services provide a range of community and hospital-based mental health services, integrated with health and social care.

Community services are evolving with NHSE Long Term Plan, with a focus on integrated care around four Primary Care Networks (PCNs). Two mental health hubs serve the North and South of Westminster, each with functional groupings for each PCN, including the Regent’s Health PCN team and St John’s Wood PCN team in the North hub.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties:

  • Provide clinical advice and support during triage, MDT, and other meetings.
  • Ensure timely triage of referrals.
  • Assess new patients and supervise assessments by team members.
  • Review complex cases and ensure appropriate care.
  • Manage Mental Health Act-related work.
  • Conduct domiciliary visits for assessment and treatment.
  • Respond to emergencies with domiciliary assessments.
  • Assess residents in crisis in other boroughs.
  • Address physical health needs.
  • Monitor caseloads and facilitate discharges.
  • Develop relationships with GPs and providers.
  • Support GPs and primary care clinicians with mental health advice.
  • Coordinate with wards for admission/discharge planning.
  • Liaise with CRHTT, Psychiatric Liaison, AMHP, and Forensic Services.
  • Engage with voluntary sector services to support recovery.
  • Ensure appropriate cover during absences.

Leadership responsibilities:

  • Lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Meet regularly with team and managers to ensure targets are met.
  • Support recruitment and retention.
  • Supervise junior and trainee staff.
  • Teach medical students.
  • Develop relationships with Primary Care Networks to support integrated care.
