Job description

Consultant in General Adult Inpatient Psychiatry (PICU)

The post holder will have principal duties to provide clinical care to Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster residents admitted to Nile Ward. They will be supported by the multidisciplinary team (MDT) including a Higher Specialty Trainee (ST), currently two part-time STs, 2 Core Trainees (CT 2-3), an Occupational Therapist, a pharmacist, and a psychologist.

The post holder will provide joint leadership with the ward manager to promote the ward's performance culture, ensuring best practices are employed and the Trust's quality and productivity targets are met. They will promote good clinical care for all patients, addressing both mental and physical health needs.

A key feature of the Acute Service vision is delivering inpatient care through an integrated multidisciplinary team with shared ownership of the ward environment and clinical services. The post holder will adopt a pragmatic leadership style to foster this environment, ensuring collaborative working at both clinical and operational levels.

The post holder will participate in Quality Improvement and service evaluation projects and will be encouraged to undertake relevant research for service improvement, whether short or long-term.

Together with the Matron and ward manager, the post holder will provide overall clinical leadership for the MDT, including direct assessments and consultations. Responsibilities include:

  1. Providing medical input, consultation, and clinical leadership to the ward, with overall clinical responsibility for admitted patients.
  2. Leading in care planning and risk assessment for patients subject to the care planning process.
  3. Acting as Responsible Clinician, attending and preparing reports for Mental Health Tribunals and Managers' hearings.
  4. Maintaining regular clinical liaison with Community Mental Health Teams, forensic community services, prison services, and the Home Treatment Team to facilitate timely patient discharges.
  5. Providing medical input and clinical leadership aligned with the Trust's strategic objectives.
