CNWL is seeking a permanent full-time Consultant Psychiatrist for Nile Ward, a multi-award-winning Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit in Kensington and Chelsea, dedicated to treating male patients in the most acute phase of their mental illness.

The ward features a multidisciplinary team committed to evidence-based, holistic care, adhering to RCPsych standards. It has twelve beds, a de-escalation room, and access to two seclusion rooms. Patients benefit from facilities within and outside the hospital, with close collaboration with local organizations and charities to provide therapeutic activities both on-site and in the community. The team’s quality improvement initiatives are nationally and internationally recognized, with staff engaged in projects to enhance patient outcomes and experiences.

Main duties of the job

The role involves providing psychiatric assessment and treatment to patients on a 12-bed male PICU ward, facilitating early transfer to open wards and discharge. The psychiatrist will work closely with colleagues in acute services to improve care quality, serving patients from Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster experiencing the most acute mental health episodes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will have clinical responsibilities for Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster residents admitted to Nile Ward, providing leadership alongside the ward manager, ensuring best practices and meeting quality and productivity targets. They will promote holistic care, participate in quality improvement and research projects, and provide clinical leadership, including:

• Medical input and leadership in care planning and risk assessments
• Attendance at Mental Health Tribunals and reports
• Clinical liaison with community teams and services for timely discharges
