Consultant in General Adult Community Psychiatry

We are seeking a dynamic Consultant Psychiatrist for our outstanding, innovative community mental health service, based at Bentley House, Harrow.

As a new consultant in the team, you will be offered a place on the Management and Leadership Course run by the Trust, in conjunction with Imperial College. The Trust also has a partnership with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), providing opportunities to gain knowledge in improvement science and enhance your skills in understanding healthcare systems and implementing change. Successful applicants will be eligible to apply for relocation support in line with the Trust's Removal Expenses Policy.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining the CCT and Approved Clinician Status.

Main duties of the job

The post is based in Bentley House, Harrow, with office space and administrative support. The team comprises a large faculty of consultants across adult mental health, with a comprehensive professional development program. A personal budget for CPD is allocated annually, and applicants can also apply for CEA awards.

You will provide clinical leadership for the multidisciplinary team, including assessments, consultations, risk assessments, and care planning. You will adopt a pragmatic leadership style, fostering collaborative working at clinical and operational levels. The role includes leading quality improvement initiatives, service evaluation projects, and encouraging research.

Other duties include:

  1. Clinical supervision of trainees and specialty doctors
  2. Responsible Clinician duties
  3. Clinical liaison with acute mental health teams
  4. Liaison with families, carers, and other stakeholders
About us

Harrow Community Mental Health Service is a multidisciplinary, community-based service providing evidence-based, safe, and effective assessments and treatments. It includes a triage team and a mental health hub with four consultants aligned to separate PCNs, with integrated psychology, psychotherapy, and occupational health services.

The service is part of an integrated mental health system in Harrow, close to Northwick Park Mental Health Unit, which offers various facilities including inpatient wards, home treatment, and liaison services. The Trust has embedded Open Dialogue and a Trauma-Informed Approach across services, with staff trained and supervised in these methods.

Job responsibilities

Clinical duties: Provide senior clinical advice, ensure timely triage of referrals, assess new patients, supervise assessments, review complex cases, manage MH Act work, conduct domiciliary visits, and liaise with other services and stakeholders.

Leadership responsibilities: Lead quality improvement initiatives, support recruitment and retention, supervise junior staff, engage in service development, and foster relationships with Primary Care Networks to promote integrated care.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Primary medical degree
  • Full GMC Registration and inclusion on the Specialist Register (or CCT expected within 6 months)
  • British Citizenship or valid work permit
  • S12 approval
Previous Experience
  • At least one year of full-time psychiatric training
  • Experience managing patients with severe mental illness in the community
  • Experience in Crisis Resolution / Home Treatment services
Knowledge
  • Thorough knowledge of mental health conditions
  • Experience in risk assessment and management
  • Knowledge of CPA, MCA, MHA, and relevant issues
  • Specialized knowledge of crisis management in severe mental illness
  • Willingness to train junior staff and students
