Applications are invited for enthusiastic and committed Consultants to join our dynamic and innovative team at St George's Emergency Department. St George's Hospital (SGH) is a designated major trauma centre, hyperacute stroke centre, and arrhythmia centre. We receive 155,000 new ED attendances annually, including 35,000 children. The hospital serves as a tertiary referral centre for specialist care such as neurology, neurosurgery, cardiology, cardiac surgery, cancer, maxillofacial surgery, plastics, ENT, and paediatrics.
Currently, there are 24 Emergency Medicine Consultants, six of whom have sub-specialty Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) accreditation. We operate a successful annualised, self-rostered Consultant rota that offers flexibility and promotes work-life balance.
Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council (or be eligible if currently working overseas) and be on the specialist register for Emergency Medicine. Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine or an equivalent qualification is essential.
The ED is a regional training centre for Adult and Paediatric Emergency Medicine. We run a comprehensive doctor rota with 78 junior clinicians, including doctors, physician associates, and advanced care practitioners. Of these, 12 are at ST4+ level and ten at ST/CT3 level. We host trainees from HEE London and HEE Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, and have a successful training and mentorship program for clinical fellows and international emergency trainees.
Our department has recently undergone extensive refurbishment, including a new streaming and triage area, an improved resus room, near doubling of our majors capacity, and two dedicated mental health patient rooms. Our new UTC is under construction and will open later this year. We also have in-house GPs providing services from 08:00 to 21:00 and Emergency Practitioners working from 07:30 to 02:00.
The ED Clinical Research Unit is among the highest recruiters for NIHR studies nationally. We have a robust infrastructure, including ED research nurses working 14 hours daily, led by a Consultant Nurse. Several EM Consultants are principal investigators, and research is actively encouraged and supported.
