Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity for an Emergency Medicine Consultant to join the Emergency Unit at Glangwili General Hospital in a modern, purpose-built unit able to accept all emergency admissions. The hospital is a busy acute hospital and the local Trauma Unit for the Health Board, working closely with other consultant physicians and surgeons in the hospital and the community.

The department handles all medical and surgical emergencies, with specialty support available such as Trauma, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT, and Ophthalmology. The hospital is supported by a large modern Adult Critical Care Unit and a Stroke unit with dedicated stroke teams.

The team comprises:

  • 6 Senior/Consultant members
  • 13 Specialty doctors
  • 3 GPST
  • 13 Clinical fellows
  • 5 Foundation Year 2 Doctors
  • 3 Foundation Year 1 Doctors
  • 2 Advanced Nurse Practitioners
  • 2 Physician Associates

The appointment is offered on a permanent basis, primarily at Glangwili General Hospital, with potential for off-site work as part of your job plan, subject to change based on the Health Board's needs.

*Candidates are encouraged to do locum shifts within the department as a trial before applying.

Main duties of the job

Provide emergency medicine services in collaboration with consultant colleagues, supporting the development of subspecialty interests, and responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illnesses.

Work closely with clinical, medical, and managerial colleagues to deliver high-quality healthcare.

Responsibilities include:

  • Delivering first-class clinical services
  • Providing effective leadership
  • Supporting teaching and research
  • Adhering to the Health Board's procedures and policies
  • Maintaining confidence in strategic plans
  • Core clinical expertise in Emergency Medicine
  • Supporting and training multidisciplinary teams
  • Participating in CPD, including audits
  • Maintaining professional development for Revalidation
  • Teaching and training medical students and postgraduates
  • Educational supervisor for junior staff
  • Conducting multidisciplinary clinical audits and applying evidence-based medicine

Essential qualifications and experience include:

  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT or CESR within 6 months of interview
  • FRCEM
  • Certified Advanced Life Support Skills
  • Higher Degree (MD, PhD, MSc, or equivalent)

Clinical experience required:

  • Broad experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems or equivalent
  • Participation in CPD
  • Competence in Emergency Medicine
  • Effective communication skills
  • Experience in communicating bad news
  • Experience in NHS
  • Research and training in subspecialty services
  • Evidence of above-average performance

Clinical governance requirements include participation in audits, understanding of NHS structure, risk management, research, and clinical management participation.
