Job description

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

1 x Consultant in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma (Full Time)

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint 1 new Consultant in Emergency General Surgery and Trauma, full time, 10 PA, to join one of the UK’s vanguard units in acute care surgery based at University Hospital Aintree.

The Emergency General Surgery Unit (EGSU) is a high-volume unit providing emergency operations of all complexities and is in the highest volume tier for emergency laparotomies according to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit. The unit is central to the major trauma service, with the major trauma centre at Aintree seeing one of the highest rates of penetrating trauma outside London.

The appointee will primarily provide acute general surgical care, including leading visceral injury management and major haemorrhage control within the major trauma service. The appointee should align with a subspecialty interest, with elective operating lists and clinics available.

The team of consultants will work on a rotational basis over a cycle of acute and non-acute weeks. Two consultants will cover daytime acute general surgery: one for admissions and ambulatory care, and the other for in-patients and emergency theatres. A third consultant will oversee visceral trauma surgery, leading daily MDT trauma meetings, reviewing radiology, and managing trauma patients in the Critical Care Unit, delivering trauma surgery for major haemorrhage and visceral injury.

During non-acute weeks, responsibilities include covering colleagues' leave and delivering elective activities.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, and Royal Liverpool University Hospital. We are part of the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, formed on 1 Nov 2024 from LUHFT and Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, aiming to improve patient care.

The group employs over 16,800 colleagues serving the community of over 630,000 across Merseyside, providing general, emergency, and regional specialized services for over two million people in the North West.

Aintree University Hospital is the sole adult major trauma receiving centre for Cheshire and Merseyside and hosts regional services including an award-winning stroke unit. Broadgreen Hospital offers elective surgical, diagnostic, and treatment services, along with specialist rehabilitation. Liverpool Women’s Hospital specializes in women and babies’ health, delivering over 7,200 babies annually in the UK’s largest single-site maternity hospital. The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest in the country with 100% single bedrooms, focusing on complex planned care and specialist services.
